New HID Innovation Doubles Memory Capacity of Its Proximity Access Cards and Readers

Irvine, California (August 7, 2000) Think how much more you could do if you could retain and remember twice as much as you currently can. HID has made this desire a reality for manufacturers who use their radio frequency-based electronic identification products. HID today announced the availability of an expanded memory feature in its expansive line of proximity access control cards and readers.

HID's expanded memory feature, called Long Format, offers twice the data storage capacity as its existing line of cards and readers. Typical proximity card data formats use 26 bits of memory, while HID cards have historically offered 37 bits of memory capacity. With the Long Format technology, HID cards will now provide 85 bits of data storage. The additional memory real estate translates into two distinct benefits for access control systems manufacturers.

First, with HID's Long Format products, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will be able to create an almost infinite number of unique data formats. These unique data formats can be custom-designed for specific installations to enhance the integrity of the access control system and ensure uniformity across multiple sites.

HID's Long Format technology offers a second benefit for applications involving either longer data formats, such as those commonly used in Europe, or the migration of magnetic stripe to proximity. Both of these applications require more data capacity than typical proximity identification products can support. With HID's Long Format technology, access control OEMs can offer the benefits of proximity identification to end users whose existing technology would have disqualified it.

Long Format-enabled versions of HID's ProxPoint, Thinline II, MiniProx, ProxPro, MaxiProx readers are available for purchase now. Long Format-enabled versions of HID's remaining proximity readers will be available by the end of 2000.
